Recently, the Bureau of Indian Standards shared the draft version of IS 1893:2023 for commentary purposes. This standard represents the criteria for the earthquake-resistant design of structures. The draft version of IS 1893 : 2023 is circulated by bureau of indian standard on April 2023 for the initial commentary from the end users. The format for sending comments on BIS Documents is given in the draft version of IS 1893.

IS 1893 – 2023 Part 1 includes only the general provisions for earthquake forces applicable to all structures. The other parts of this standard are specifically focused on particular types of structures. For example, Part 2 includes the design criteria exclusively for buildings.
Major Changes in IS 1893 : 2023 Draft Version
In this seventh revision of IS 1893, the following major changes have been included:
- A revised Earthquake Zone Map based on Probabilistic Earthquake Hazard Assessment has been introduced.
- Design horizontal acceleration coefficients have been specified for each Earthquake Zone for use in strength and serviceability designs.
- Acceleration Response Spectra have been defined up to natural period of 10 seconds.
- A method has been provided for estimating soil flexibility.
- The method for estimating liquefaction potential at a site has been revised.
