What is stub column?

Stub column is defined as a type of column that is not directly connected with footing, constructed over the beam or slab to transfer the load on the primary beam.

Stub column is a non-structural type of column and the height of stub column is less or similar to floor height.

The stub column does not have any footing or pedestal like a general column. Because its start or you can say it is constructed over the beam or slab to carry the extra load that is acts over it.

The stub column act on primary beam as a point load.

What is the purpose of Stub column?

Generally, Stub column is provided when the span of rooms is more, or in case of geometry of various floors is not symmetrical.

Sometimes, stub column is also provided to increase the stiffness of Buildings. Stub column is used to transfer the load from one beam to another beam.

It is a one type of redundant compression member.

When Stub column used?

In most of the cases stub column or floating column is used to support the unsymmetric or discontinued structural system to create path to transfer load easily on primary structural system.

Stub column is used as per the architectural point of view. It is used to increase the aesthetic view of building.

Stub column is used when the length of the beam increases. It will be used to support the beam to satisfy the deflection limit provision as per the Indian standard for beam.

It is also used when the new construction happens in the existing building which is not taken into consideration while designing of building. So to carry the load of this extra construction, Stub Columns are provided in the building.

I tell you a very common Example of stub column that is,

When the water tank is constructed in a building for only 70 peoples, but in case more than 70 peoples are come into the building or lives in the building, it is necessary to construct an extra water tank to fulfill the water requirement of peoples. In this condition, the stub columns are provided below the additional water tank to carry the load of the tank and safely transport the load on the primary beam.

Disadvantages of Stub Column

Main disadvantage of stub column, it increase the shear force in beam on which it is rested (stub column not have foundation, it is rested on primary beam) due to that the beam fail in shear. To overcome shear failure of beam we need to increase the cross section of beam. That is sometimes un economical.

So Use of Stub column increases the size of beam on which it is rested.

As per the Earthquake Tips by IITk,

The building with column that hang or float on beams at an intermediate storey and do not go all the way to the foundations, have discontinuities in the load transfer path as shown in image. Any deviation or discontinuity in load transfer path causes a poor performance of building during earthquake shakes.
